Congress keeps talking crypto amid trade war shifts

Representatives on the House Financial Service’s Digital Assets Subcommittee met today for a hearing on US crypto policy. That topic may not be top of the news cycle, but is still big in Washington. Rep. Brad Sherman from California, who has long been skeptical of any legislation deemed “pro crypto,” had an interesting take. “New coins” will overtake “old coins,” he said, and he’s all for new coins. We aren’t sure at all what he means here, but we think he’s saying he’d like to see some disruption in the crypto space. The hearing comes after six Financial Services Committee Democrats voted to advance the House’s STABLE Act last week. The legislation is similar to the GENIUS Act in the Senate (which also received bipartisan support), but the House’s version gives more power to state regulators to oversee issuers. Bitcoin futures 'deleveraging' wipes $10B open interest in 2 weeks

Bitcoin exchanges are getting a key “deleveraging event,” which should shape future gains, new research says. In one of its “ Quicktake” blog posts on March 17, onchain analytics platform CryptoQuant revealed a $10 billion capitulation on Bitcoin futures markets. Bitcoin derivatives traders have flipped firmly risk-off since BTC/USD hit its current all-time highs in mid-January. CryptoQuant, which uses data from various major crypto exchanges, calculates that aggregate open interest (OI) on futures fell by $10 billion in just three weeks from Feb. 20 through March 4. “On January 17th, Bitcoin's open interest reached an all-time high of over $33B, indicating that leverage in the market had never been this high,” contributor Darkfost writes. The drop, he argues, “can be considered as a natural market reset, an essential phase for sustaining a bullish continuation.” Continuing, fellow CryptoQuant contributor Kriptolik eyed increasingly active derivatives markets overall since November 2024. Traders could be prepping to buy as USDT activity hits a 6-month high

Onchain activity for Tether has hit a sixth-month high, possibly indicating traders are gearing up to jump back into the market, according to analysts. Data shared by the blockchain data platform Santiment in a March 12 X post shows Tether’s on-chain activity has been on the rise, peaking with over 143,000 wallets making transfers on March 11, the highest in six months. “When USDT other stablecoin activity spikes during price drops, traders are preparing to buy. Added buy pressure aids in crypto prices recovering,” Santiment said. It comes as Bitcoin dropped to a four-month low of $76,700 on March 11, as the wider crypto market shed even more of the gains made post-US election amid macroeconomic uncertainty and an escalating tariff war.
