This is an extremely misinformed take IMO. The question of sequencer centralization is completely orthogonal to the collection of fees. An L2 is going to always charge fees in excess of what is being paid to the L1. The reason for this is because you may want to have some resource metering (e.g. congestion) fees in place, or you may want to implement a protocol to charge a form of priority fee like PGA or Timeboost. The collection of those fees is not the sequencer but rather the chain operator. I will use @arbitrum as an example, as I am most familiar with it. Arbitrum One (the main public Arbitrum chain) is operated and governed by the Arbitrum tokenholders. All chain fees, less reimbursement for L1 data posting, flow into treasury wallets controlled onchain by the token holders. These fees since the establishment of the DAO are in excess of $50m. That is the case irrespective of whether the sequencer is centralized or decentralized. The operator of the seuqencer does not get to keep these profits. Should the sequencer be decentralized the analysis would be exactly the same. The sequencer doesn't get to choose how much they get to keep. The market or a negotiated agreement will determine how much value the sequencer is entitled to and that can range from anything between 0%-100%. Chain operation today is a 90%+ gross profit margin business, and is a potentially extremely lucrative business. You don't NEED the sequencer to be decentralized for that to be the case.
