Ethereum client Geth releases "Schwarzschild" update, fixes old version vulnerabilities

Bitget2025/01/31 09:27

The developers of the Ethereum client Geth released version 1.14.13, codenamed "Schwarzschild", this Thursday. This version specifically addresses a vulnerability affecting the peer-to-peer (p2p) layer of Geth, which could lead to denial-of-service attacks on the nodes running them and potentially affect second-layer clients. Geth is the most widely used execution layer client in Ethereum. The vulnerability was classified as CVE-2025-24883, indicating that Geth versions are "vulnerable to DoS attacks through malicious p2p messages". Version 1.14.0 seems to have inadvertently introduced this security issue. Users running Geth 1.14 (or higher versions up to 1.14 .13) are urged to update to the latest version to mitigate risks of node crashes or other interruptions.
This emergency release is crucial because the vulnerability was initially discovered by security researchers at Polygon and might allow attackers remotely crash nodes running vulnerable versions of Geth.
The Geth team clarified that nodes running on v1 .13.x series are not affected by this specific vulnerability.
