Arsenal’s Gabriel Magalhaes Under Fire for Pushing ‘Scam’ Meme Coin After 2-0 Humiliation by Bournemouth
Arsenal is taking bigs L’s on and off the pitch with Gabriel Magalhaes’s promotion of a shady meme coin, GDOG crypto, the day after a deeply humiliating loss for the Gunners.
Gabriel Magalhaes, a defender for Arsenal FC, one of the English Premier League’s top football teams, has landed himself in hot water by promoting a crypto meme coin – hot on the tails of a humiliating performance.
The football player’s timing made things infinitely worse. His promotional social media post came after Arsenal’s surprising 2-0 loss to Bournemouth. In the same game, his centre-back partner, William Saliba, was sent off after a clumsy challenge.
$GDOG is the token being promoted by Gabriel. It underwent a presale this past Monday (October 21). The tagline for this unimaginative dog-themed meme coin is ‘Your faithful doggo friend. The only barking meme coin you need.’
Promotion Of Low-Effort Meme Coin By A High-Profile Athlete Is A Bad Look For Arsenal
This move from Gabriel Magalhaes looks to be a silly one for a sector that is trying to gain legitimacy with the global football audience. Everything about GDOG is screaming a low-effort scam.
From botted social media followers on Instagram and X, no notable people in the space are talking about it, and the branding looks like any one of the 10,000 dog meme coins on Solana (most of which are dead).
Now, promoting crypto isn’t uncommon in football these days. Multiple top-tier teams across the UK, Italy, Spain and Germany now have crypto/Web3 sponsorships.
Take North London’s top club, Tottenham, who sport crypto exchange Kraken as a sleeve sponsor . Then there is Sheffield United with their recent MANEKI meme coin shirt sponsorship deal.
Leading crypto casino, Rollbit, are also the shirt sponsor of Premier League club, Southampton. Meanwhile, the popular Forex platform and crypto exchange Trade Nation sponsor the upcoming Aston Villa squad.
These are all great deals that help to legitimize the crypto sector to the outside world, with over 3.5 billion football fans worldwide, per FIFA .
However, when Gabriel’s GDOG scam coin promotion inevitably ends up at 0, fans will use this as a stick to beat the already frowned-upon Web3 space.

Gabriel Magalhaes’ Braindead GDOG Moment Has Led To Backlash From Gunners Fans
As for Gabriel’s timing with this promotion of GDOG, it is hilariously bad. Arsenal fans were already having a bad time after their humiliating 2-0 loss at Bournemouth, which has seen many of turn into delusional conspiracy theorists (nothing new).
They’re claiming that the football hierarchy is against them and doing everything in their power to prevent them from succeeding. Or, maybe your ‘Rolls-Royce’ of a defender should try not pulling down the last man when he is through on goal and rightly being sent off as a result. Just a thought.
The Arsenal subreddit has a whole thread dedicated to Magalhaes’ promotion of GDOG, with 90+ comments lambasting the defender. There were some more light-hearted replies to the story, one of the best being ‘Just when you don’t think this weekend can get any worse, lol.’
Some fans were more disgusted, with one user commenting, ‘It’s never enough. I hope the club shuts this down immediately. If he wants to shill useless crypto coins, he can do that after he retires.’
