Ethereum’s future developments in light of Vitalik Buterin’s goals of unity and speed
- Ethereum’s performance will grow by more than 100,000 transactions per second thanks to Vitalik Buterin, strengthening the mainnet and layer-2 networks.
- Making layer-2 rollups secure like the mainnet is essential, but bugs are slowing down progress in achieving this goal.
- Buterin wants to improve user experience by making layer-2 networks feel connected, in that users can easily send tokens without bother.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin unveiled his ideas for the “Surge,” the company’s next planned phase. Buterin highlighted reaching over 100,000 transactions per second (TPS) across Ethereum’s layer-2 and mainnet blockchains in a blog post dated October 17. He also wants to create a unified Ethereum ecosystem by enhancing layer-2 solution interoperability.
Scaling Challenges and Solutions
Buterin emphasized Ethereum’s difficulties despite the platform’s support of a rollup-centric future. While the Dencun upgrade in March helped improve scalability and reduce costs, it also introduced risks. Critics argue that layer-2 solutions are diverting users and revenue from the mainnet, contributing to inflationary pressures on Ether.
Moreover, Buterin stressed that Ethereum rollups must become trustless, similar to the mainnet. Bugs in the code have slowed progress on this front, making it harder for layer-2 solutions to inherit Ethereum’s core properties . To address these challenges, Buterin proposed improving data compression and making L2 networks more efficient and trustless.
Layer-2 Integration and User Experience
Buterin also touched on user experience, which has become a growing concern for Ethereum users. He pointed out that layer-2 networks must feel unified rather than fragmented. Users should not need to bridge or swap tokens manually between chains, which adds unnecessary complexity.
To address these issues, Buterin proposed improving backend communication between layer-2s. This would make it easier for users to send tokens across chains without the hassle of manually bridging them.

Buterin acknowledged that simply increasing the gas limit on Ethereum’s base chain could lead to centralization risks. Instead, he suggested exploring solutions like multidimensional gas pricing and more efficient bytecode formats.
Ultimately, Buterin’s roadmap for the Surge phase focuses on scaling Ethereum while preserving its decentralized and robust foundation. Achieving these goals could propel Ethereum into a new era of scalability and adoption, ensuring its long-term success.
