Ethereum Founder Vitalik Buterin Shares His Long-Term Goals for Ethereum! Here Are the Details
Vitalik Buterin has set an ambitious 100,000 TPS target for Ethereum’s collection-centric scaling roadmap.
Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined a long-term vision to reach 100,000 transactions per second (TPS) across Ethereum's Layer 1 (L1) and Layer 2 (L2) networks.
Vitalik Buterin Sets Ambitious 100,000 TPS Target for Ethereum’s Aggregation-Centric Scaling Roadmap
Buterin detailed this goal in a blog post published today, emphasizing that the collection-centric scaling roadmap will remain at the core of Ethereum’s strategy but will require further refinement.
Buterin described the upcoming phase of the roadmap as “The Surge,” which focuses on completing the vision of rolling-based scaling while maintaining L1-level robustness, decentralization, and security.
“Our mission is to complete the rollup-centric roadmap and resolve these issues while preserving the robustness and decentralization that makes Ethereum L1 special,” Buterin wrote.
Besides the ambitious 100,000 TPS target, other key goals include:
- Maintaining decentralization and security on the Ethereum mainnet
- Maximizing interoperability between various Layer 2 networks
- Ensuring scalability for emerging high-volume, low-value applications
Buterin noted that despite recent updates like Dencun, Ethereum still lacks the speed needed to support extensive user applications.
A key improvement lies in data availability sampling, which allows nodes to validate data without downloading the whole thing, improving both speed and efficiency.
Buterin set a mid-term goal of achieving 16MB of bandwidth per socket, which could enable Ethereum to process up to 58,000 TPS.
That’s a significant jump from the current 375kB per socket for rollups, but Buterin acknowledged that even that level of throughput might not be enough for sectors like consumer payments or decentralized social media.
For these high-volume applications, Buterin suggested revisiting Plasma, a scaling solution where operators send off-chain blocks and record Merkle roots on-chain.
