OpenAI partners with former Google CEO to launch $10 million Superalignment funding project
OpenAI has partnered with former Google CEO Eric Schmidt to launch a $10 million "Superalignment Rapid Grants" program to support research and ensure the alignment and safety of superhuman AI systems. This funding program focuses on the alignment and safety challenges that future superhuman AI systems may face. These systems will have powerful capabilities that could bring great benefits, but also pose significant risks. Current AI alignment techniques, such as reinforcement learning based on human feedback (RLHF), may not be able to handle the complexity and creative behavior of superhuman AI. The research funding categories include weak to strong generalization, interpretability, and scalable supervision. The funding program will provide $100,000 to $2 million in funding for academic laboratories, non-profit organizations, and individual researchers. For graduate students, a one-year $150,000 OpenAI Superalignment Scholarship will also be provided, including a $75,000 stipend and $75,000 for computing and research funding. The funding program does not require applicants to have prior experience in the alignment field, and welcomes first-time alignment researchers to apply. The application deadline is February 18th.
