  • NFT company Yuga Labs hosted a Bored Ape NFT collection event in Hong Kong.
  • Troubling reports of severe eye problems have emerged from attendees who participated in the event.
  • Other event participants voiced grievances about poor organization.

Industry giant Yuga Labs celebrated its NFT project, the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection in Hong Kong at ApeFest, with festivities from November 3 to 5.

However, the event took an unexpected turn when attendees came forth with complaints of eye problems, attributing them to the event’s lighting setup.

From Eye-Conic to Eye-Concerns

On November 5th, numerous individuals took to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, to voice their grievances about the recently concluded ApeFest, raising alarms of extreme eye pain and discomfort.

Bored Ape Yacht Club member Feld shared a tweet detailing his experience, to which more than 15 users replied with similar symptoms and concerns.

Anyone else’s eyes burning from last night? Woke up at 3am with extreme pain and ended up in the ER.

I saw a couple reports but just trying to figure out if there was a common thread.

Many of the attendees underscored the seriousness of their discomfort, including blurry visions and burning skin, some even seeking emergency medical treatment.

Cryptocurrency trader Adrian Zduńczyk also joined the discussion, disclosing similar concerns and his “photokeratitis” diagnosis.

“We’ve most likely been exposed to an experience similar to Mt Everest climbers - snow blindness. Snow blindness is caused by unprotected exposure of the cornea and conjunctiva to ultraviolet (UV) light, specifically UV-B. Snow blindness is therefore sunburn of the eye and can be extremely painful.”

In response, Yuga Labs took to Twitter to address the users’ concerns.

“Apes, we are aware of the eye-related issues that affected some of the attendees of ApeFest and have been proactively reaching out to individuals since yesterday to try and find the potential root causes.”

The company added that fewer than 1% of attendees were affected, advising anyone with similar concerns to seek medical attention as a precaution.

Some attendees have voiced dissatisfaction with the event’s organization setup and merchandise distribution.
